Findhorn, Morayshire - Spacetherm

Findhorn, Morayshire

Mrs Lisa Mead contacted A. Proctor Group after finding information on the Web regarding thin insulation solutions for internal upgrades.

John Donaldson, Regional Sales Manager & John Johnston, Thermal Business Manager visited the house to look at the potential of supplying the new Spacetherm Fermacell Laminate to the internal surface of the main external solid walls.

The property sits on an exposed site overlooking the North Sea on the Moray Coast. Due to a combination of poor insulation and an inadequate night storage heating system, the house was very cold in winter. This was replaced as part of the renovation by Thermaskirt skirting board central heating and a wood pellet boiler system.

The rooms in the property are of reasonable size with a good fat surface, traditional methods would  have  required a joiner to fit timber strapping to the walls, then insulation of approximately 60 – 100mm thick cut and ftted between or over the strapping and finally  finished  by a plasterer. This would  all  have  taken  up more space, time and potentially three different trades or companies to have the wall finished.

As an example of the heat retention in the house, back in November we were having a bit of teething trouble with the new wood pellet boiler/wet heating  system and it stopped working one night. The house had been heated to about 19 degrees during the day, but was off completely overnight. It was 7 degrees outside overnight, and in the morning the temperature in the house was still 17 degrees. We were quite amazed about this, as prior to the renovation, the house had been very cold most of the time and had certainly lost the heat much quicker than this when the heating was off.

By choosing  the  Spacetherm Fermacell Laminate the overall thickness of the insulation measure added to the wall was kept to below 30mm.  The Spacetherm Fermacell boards were mechanically fixed to the existing wall surface with minimum disruption. The SPACETHERM range of high performance materials provides the highest level of thermal insulation possible with a class leading thermal conductivity of 0.012 W/mK.

This remarkable performance is achieved through the use of fexible aerogel blankets developed by ASPEN AEROGELS INC. The insulation used in the SPACETHERM panels is a unique high performance material derived from silica gel.  Until now Aerogel has been primarily used in industrial and petrochemical applications where it’s dependable and easily verifable performance has been thoroughly proven.
